She has been the lead researcher and author of several Pembina Institute publications and commissioned reports, covering landowner rights, coalbed methane development, the use of water by the oil industry and carbon capture and storage. Mary works on air quality issues as a member of the Board of Directors of the West Central Airshed Society and with a sub-committee of the Clean Air Strategic Alliance. She also contributes to evaluations of the environmental impact of energy projects, including oil sands developments and coal-fired power plants, and serves on several government advisory committees. In 2002, Mary received a Canadian Environment Award for her work on clean air issues. She is also the recipient of a 2005 Alberta Centennial Medal. Mary holds a BA and PhD in Geography from the University of Exeter, UK (1969), where she also taught for four years. Publications
